Board of Director Spotlight
Meet BBU Vice President Derek Thompson
Derek is a native of Silver Lake, Kansas, and graduated from Washburn University in 1999, with a degree in business. Derek entered the financial services arena in the fall of 1999 by way of a national, corporately-owned marketing organization as his first opportunity out of college. Derek started and co-founded Nextgen Cattle in 2016. “The goal of Nextgen Cattle Co. is to have a foundation of integrity, trust, passion and vision in our approach, in our cattle, and in our service to provide data and consulting to each ranch that chooses to purchase cattle from us.” Nextgen Cattle Feeding includes two feed yards with approximately 45,000 head capacity in southwest Kansas and a 10,000 head grow yard in Allen, Kan. Nextgen Trading was started in 2018 in which it trades bulk feeding commodities across the United States. In 2019 Nextgen Trading traded over 250,000 tons of feed. Read more about Derek >

Built for Heterosis
“The Beefmaster Calves we have marketed appear to outperform our straightbred calves about 75 to 100 pounds. That’s like getting about an extra calf for every eight calves you produce-for free! We’ve been real pleased with that on the steer calves we go to town with.” – Dr. Bob Evans, Tecumseh, Okla.
Indeed, the Beefmaster is an American original, the first breed designed to infuse maximum retained heterosis into cow herds. So if you’re giving up ground in the traits that matter-and want to raise calves that look like this-take a look at a Beefmaster Bull.
Did You Know?
Tom Lasater developed the Beefmaster breed on his ranch by a three-way cross between Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman breeds. He came up with the Six Essentials we know today by making a list of 25 traits that he thought cattle couldn’t get along without. He then boiled them down into 6 that we are familiar with: Disposition, Fertility, Weight, Conformation, Hardiness and Milk Production. In 1954, the U.S. Department of Agriculture officially recognized the Beefmaster as an American breed. Nearly 67 years later, Beefmaster Breeders all over the world are proudly continuing to raise, and produce high quality Beefmaster Cattle and Genetics. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our breed, and are thankful for innovative cattlemen and cattlewomen such as Tom Lasater.
