Noble Research Institute Moves to Demonstrate Heterosis in Their Cow Herds

ARDMORE, Okla. – Heterosis is an often-overlooked production and financial advantage that many commercial cattle producers are not utilizing. Maternal heterosis can be measured in several ways: stayability of the cow, cow lifetime productivity, increase in calving and weaning rates, increase in calf weighing weight, and a subsequent increase of weaning weight per exposed cow. Developing and maintaining a deliberate maternal heterosis program is easy to talk about but difficult in practice to accomplish. Furthermore, small- to mid-sized producers find it difficult to manage the logistics of managing several distinct breeds on their operation to develop a cross-breeding program.

The Noble Research Institute determined they would utilize Beefmaster and Hereford genetics to take advantage of cross-breeding and maternal heterosis in their predominately commercial Angus-based cow herd, which is comprised of approximately 550 mother cows.

Barber Joins Beefmaster Breeders United Staff

 

BOERNE, Texas – Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is proud to announce that Rylee Barber will serve as their new Youth and Membership Programs Coordinator. Her duties include managing the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) program and working with the BBU membership on a daily basis.

“I am passionate about the livestock industry and I am excited to be joining the Beefmaster family,” said Barber.

Barber is originally from the Texas Panhandle, where she grew up in the small town of Channing, Texas and was raised on a purebred Hereford seedstock operation. Rylee’s family has lived in Channing and raised Herefords there since 1904. Barber grew up through the National Junior Hereford Association and currently serves as the Vice Chairman on the junior board.

Barber graduated from Texas A&M University with her Bachelors in Agricultural Communications and Journalism in December 2019. While attending school, Barber was involved in several clubs and served as the […]

Beefmaster Welcomes New International Program Director

 

BOERNE, Texas  – Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is excited to bring a new addition to the Beefmaster staff. Jon Garza will serve as the Director of International Programs and his duties include coordinating our international programs, as well as helping grow more interest in Beefmaster genetics on the international and domestic fronts.

Jon comes to us from the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), where he most recently acted as Director for International Programs and Livestock Export Pens. His duties consisted of directing, developing and implementing and being the primary information source for the agency relative to all international programs and livestock export.

“I am excited to be a part of the Beefmaster family and working for all of you through expanding our current markets and opening new markets around the globe,” said Garza.

Junior Beefmaster Hosts 34th National Show and Convention

 

BOERNE, TEXAS – More than 200 Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) members gathered the week of July 15-21, 2018, at the Four States Fairgrounds and Holiday Inn Convention Center in Texarkana, Ark., for a fun-filled week at the 2018 JBBA National Show and Convention.

In addition to the cattle shows, the event also included contests, leadership training, engaging speakers, a live and silent auction fundraiser, family fun night, the annual awards banquet and dance and other exciting activities.

Bonnie Ramirez, JBBA Coordinator, said if she had to describe the week-long event in a few words they would be “An Awesome Experience.”

Horton Selected as 2018 Summer Intern

 

Boerne, Texas – Emily Horton has been selected as the 2018 Livestock Publications Council (LPC) summer intern for Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU). Emily is a senior in agricultural communications at Oklahoma State University and will graduate in December 2018. Horton began her internship duties on June 4 at the BBU office in Boerne.

Emily’s family has owned and operated a cow-calf operation for more than 120 years in Hardeman County, Texas on the historic Bar A Ranch. For more than 40 of those years, Emily’s family has raised Beefmaster cattle and she is incredibly passionate about the breed. She is also a very talented writer, photographer and enjoys public relations and event management.

This summer she will work with the BBU communications team, helping to plan and coordinate the production of the fall issue of The Beefmaster Pay Weight, as well as assist in capturing content for use in marketing pieces. She […]

Beefmaster Breeders United is now accepting internship applications

 

BOERNE, Texas – Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is now accepting applications for the summer communications internship. The Livestock Publications Council (LPC) is pleased to partner with BBU to offer the 2018 LPC Summer Internship. One student communicator will receive $4,500 and the chance to work for a leading cattle breed organization.

The selected intern will assist with projects in the communications department, production of The Beefmaster Pay Weight and assist in association event management.

The internship will provide experience in writing, design, social media, videography, photography, editing, proofing, communicating with clients and managing projects.

College juniors or seniors are encouraged to apply and membership in Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) is preferred but not mandatory. Writing and editing skills are highly recommended, along with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, InDesign, Photoshop and AP (Associated Press) style.

Beefmaster Foundation Launches National Endowment Campaign

– Exceeds Phase One Goal of $1 Million

BOERNE, Texas – During Beefmaster Breeders United’s (BBU) recent convention in Galveston, Texas, national campaign co-chairs Mackie Bounds and Bob Siddons, announced the public launch of the “Foundation for the Future” endowment campaign, an initiative to secure a permanent financial base which will enable the Beefmaster Educational Endowment Foundation (B.E.E.F.) to aggressively accomplish research and education, which will help to both enhance the breed and provide credible scientific research and information for BBU members and the public on the benefits of the Beefmaster breed.

The phase one goal of the campaign was to secure $1 million in pledges, which may be paid over five years, at the time of the public launching of the campaign.

Wittenburg Honored with Beefmaster Legends Award

 

BOERNE, Texas – Hans Wittenburg of Edna, Texas was presented the Legends Award by Nolan Ryan during the 57th Annual Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) Convention “Beefmasters on the Bay” in Galveston, Texas. The Legends Award was started in 2002 by then BBU president Nolan Ryan and is awarded to members who have been raising Beefmaster cattle for 50 years or more. There have been eight previous Legends Award recipients prior to Hans Wittenburg.

Wittenburg grew up in Lockhart, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry and was commissioned second lieutenant in the United States Army. As a young man fresh out of college, Hans married his wife Mary Ann on January 28, 1951, and went to work for Green Valley Cattle Co. in San Marcos, Texas. Oklahoma Cattleman Selected as Beefmaster Breeder of the Year

 

BOERNE, Texas – Tom and Deidra Hood, Hidden Hollow Beefmasters of Tahlequah, Okla., were announced as the 2017 Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) Breeder of the Year during the 57th Annual BBU Convention “Beefmasters on the Bay” in Galveston, Texas.

Tom and Deidra have been BBU members since 1984 and are active members of the Central States Beefmaster Breeders Association (CSBBA), Arkansas Beefmaster Breeders Association, Central Texas Beefmaster Breeders Association, Louisiana Beefmaster Breeders Association and the Ozark and Heart of America Beefmaster Marketing Group (OHOA). The Hoods played an important role in the success of both OHOA and CSBBA for more than a decade, serving as sale manager for their annual sales and serving in multiple leadership roles, including on the board of directors. Kentucky Cattleman Selected as Beefmaster New Member of the Year

 

BOERNE, Texas – Brian and Becca Melloan, Channarock Farm of Rockfield, Ky., were announced as the 2017 Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) New Member of the Year during the 57th Annual BBU Convention “Beefmasters on the Bay” in Galveston, Texas.

Brian and Becca, along with their son Garrett, are lifetime members of BBU and the Southeastern Beefmaster Breeders Association (SEBBA). They participate in whole herd reporting and they DNA test all of their embryo donor cows. They also ultrasound and measure all animals on the farm, use artificial insemination and embryo transfer significantly, and they are proud supporters of the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA). Brian is on the SEBBA Board of Directors, BBU International Committee, South 40 Committee, Chair of the SEBBA Executive Sale Committee, and the manager of the first SEBBA bull test.
