Carr Ranch Gathering

Bill and Dusty Carr, owners of Hilltop Beefmasters, hosted a ranch gathering on October 20th and over 75 cattlemen and cattlewomen were in attendance. The ranch gathering was held at their Wilson County ranch, which is 8 miles west of Floresville, Texas.

The ranch gathering offered continuing education units and beef quality assurance credits to those in attendance. Speakers included Dr. Brodie Miller of the Texas Animal Health Commission, Dr. Rick Machen of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, Dr. Bob Lyons a Range Specialist with Texas AgriLife Extension, Collin Osbourn of Beefmaster Breeders United, Dr. Scott Stevens of Deason Animal Hospital and Bryan Davis of Wilson County – Texas AgriLife Extension.

Dr. Miller discussed the current status of the Cattle Fever Tick outbreak in Live Oak County and update attendees on fever tick prevention. Dr. Machen discussed the common traits of successful ranches and gave a beef cattle market update and futures outlook. Dr. Lyons’ presentation moved the attendees outdoors for a demonstration and discussion on herbicide application for brush control. Collin Osbourn gave an update on the Beefmaster breed and discussed the various new programs, indices and research projects happening in the breed. Dr. Stevens held an overview of reproductive diseases and possible management techniques to prevent reproductive diseases. Lastly, the ranch gathering concluded with Bryan Davis giving a presentation of laws and regulations for private applicators.

Following the presentations, the attendees were invited to view the sale and display cattle, as well as stay for a beef dinner, drinks and dance. Hats off to the Carr family for organizing and hosting such an outstanding event.
